About

The UNEP FI Climate Pathway Navigator is a specialized tool designed to support financial institutions in setting science-based climate targets and assessing sectoral decarbonization pathways. Developed in collaboration with the International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis (IIASA), the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research (PIK), and financial institutions, this platform provides comprehensive data and visualizations aligned with UNEP FI’s framework for responsible banking and sustainable investment.

Financial institutions play a crucial role in accelerating the transition to a low-carbon economy. Built and refined through over a year of testing with banks, investors, insurers, and export credit agencies this tool empowers financial institutions to make informed decisions and provide them with the specific datapoints they need for target setting, portfolio steering, and corporate engagement through a clear, visual interface.

Pathway Data

Detailed information about the pathway data, including intensity calculations, emission scopes, and sectoral decarbonization pathways, can be found on our dedicated data information page.

Key Features

  • Cross-Sector Scenario Filter: Enabled users to constrain sectoral pathways by defining acceptable percentage-change ranges between a base year and target year. Filter results propagate across the entire application.
  • Sectoral Deep-Dive Analysis: Detailed indicator charts for power sector, steel, cement, transport (with sub-sector clusters for road, shipping, and aviation), and buildings — each with primary benchmarks and additional indicators and key assumptions.
  • Regional Comparison Portal: Side-by-side comparison of up to six geographies for any sector's primary indicator, with synchronized y-axes and multi-region selection.
  • Sectoral Decarbonization Pathways: Integration of sectoral pathways alongside systemic scenarios from the Scenario Compass and IPCC AR6.
  • Data Export & Sharing: Download charts as images or CSV, inspect underlying data in the IIASA Data Explorer, and share the current application state via URL.
